An external filter is one of the most effective ways to maintain clean, healthy water in your aquarium. Proper installation and care not only keep your tank crystal clear but also extend the life of your equipment. Here’s everything you need to know about setting up and maintaining our external filter range.
Safety First
Before carrying out any maintenance or adjustments, always disconnect the mains electricity supply. Never attempt to service the filter while it’s powered. Take time to fully read the instruction manual, including the troubleshooting section, to familiarise yourself with your specific model.
Setting Up the Filter Media
Once you’ve thoroughly rinsed your filter media, arrange it correctly for optimal performance. Place activated carbon in the top basket to remove toxins and discolouration, bio balls in the middle to support beneficial bacteria, and ceramic rings in the bottom for additional biological filtration. If your filter has four trays, you can split the bio balls between two trays or add extra media to suit your aquarium’s needs. Foam pads can be placed either at the top, bottom, or one in each tray, though stacking them at the top can simplify cleaning.
Ongoing Maintenance
To keep your filter performing at its best, replace activated carbon every 3–6 months and change the UV bulb every 6–8 months. When cleaning, ensure hose adaptors are fully pushed onto the unit, as the shut-off lever can sometimes catch on locking tabs if not properly fitted. Always lubricate seals and O-rings after each clean to maintain a watertight seal. Fully open and close the taps using the lever, holding down the tap adaptor when lifting the lever to remove it safely.
